You Can Help
At no time since the Great Depression has there been a more urgent need to invest in our children’s well-being. Statistics from the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s KIDS COUNT survey underscore the need for urgent action:
One in twenty children live in out-of-home placements.
One in five children live in poverty, and over one-third live in homes where no parent has full-time, year-round employment.
- By 4th grade, one in three children read below their grade level. Little statistical improvement in reading is seen by 8th grade, indicating that once a youngster falls behind in reading, it is very difficult to catch up.
- Nearly one in three children are overweight and at increased risk for diabetes and other major health complications.
Detroit is presently the 11th largest city in the U.S. according to 2007 U.S. census estimates. According to 2008 data from the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Kids Count Data Center, Detroit ranks worst among major cities in children below 200% of the poverty line and low birthweight births, and is at or near the bottom in many other indicators of child well-being, such as births to teen mothers. At 13%, Detroit’s unemployment rate is the worst of all major cities in the country (among states, Michigan also ranks worst in the country for unemployment). The high school graduation rate in Detroit is also worst in the nation, at 31.9% in 2008. Please use this link to visit the KIDS COUNT's website for more detailed information.
