Healthy Start is a federally funded initiative to lower the infant mortality rate in Detroit by improving the health and wellbeing of the women of childbearing age, infants, and families with young children. The Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion is the grantee agency providing a continuum of direct care and enabling services for low income families.
In partnership with the MPSI staff, the following services are provided:
- Home based interventions that incorporate principals of cognitive behavioral therapy and infant mental heath is provided by Tahira Khalid, LMSW. All women enrolled in the Healthy Start project are screened for depression and referred to Ms. Khalid for ongoing assistance.
- Health education is provided to all staff and is incorporated into every Healthy Start service. Rebeca Guzman, LMSW is training and education consultant who identifies evidence based curriculums for consumer education and provides ongoing training for staff.
- Deborah Simmons, LMSW, is the Consortium Coordinator who identifies and recruits consumers for the project advisory board. She provides ongoing mentoring for the parents and consumers, as well as, maintains current partnerships with grass root and social service organizations. She is assisted by Linda Hatcher, MA.
