MPSI Mission Statement
The mission of the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute (MPSI) is to conduct state-of-the-art multidisciplinary research, education, and outreach in the area of child and family development, aimed at improving the health and well-being of children, youth and families across the lifespan.
• MPSI research focuses on urban populations at increased risk due to familial, environmental, community, economic, biomedical, and psychosocial challenges and stressors.
• The MPSI serves to promote interdisciplinary research in developmental sciences across the University – bridging schools, departments, disciplines and individuals – and to help coordinate outreach programs.
• The MPSI is committed to providing high-quality and challenging undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral research training consistent with the Institute’s research and outreach Mission.
• The MPSI is dedicated to community engagement, outreach and professional development to facilitate the translation of research into policy and practice to directly improve the well-being of urban children and families.
In addition, through the Friends of the Freer House, the MPSI is also committed to preserving and restoring the Charles L. Freer House as a treasure in American art and architecture and to honor Freer’s unique role in the cultural history of Detroit.
